CO2 Action Plan
Certification for carbon reduction in transport and logistics
A growing number of multinationals and other companies realize carbon accounting in logistics is rapidly becoming the new standard and in the near future will be mandatory.
Lean & green provides companies with verified recognition for achieving their CO2-reduction targets in logistics.
Participants follow the 5 Star Framework by drafting a ‘CO2 Action Plan’ and annual measuring and monitoring of the carbon emissions.
Why hundreds of companies have already joined Lean & Green

Every Star explained THE 5 STAR FRAMEWORK
The first step with every new participant is to find out how much measurable CO2 reduction has been achieved in the past. This reduction will determine the starting point within the program.
This way a company may enter the program on the first or even second star level. After analysis of their historical data and base year they continue with the action plan for the following Star.
Over 500 companies have already started their CO2 Action Plan.
START YOUR PROJECT
Award
To start your CO2 Action Plan you collect data for the baseline measurement. The plan consists of a company description, the scope of your analysis, your measurements and the reduction projects.
20% REDUCTION IN 5 YEARS
STAR 1
Companies following the Lean & Green CO2 Action Plan and achieving over 20% CO2 reduction per transported unit within five years will receive the 1st Star.
This can also be achieved with proven reduction from historical data analysis according to the requirements for Star 1.
Reduction measures focus on internal optimization and general reduction projects.
10% REDUCTION IN 3 YEARS
STAR 2
Companies continuing the Lean & Green CO2 Action Plan and achieving an additional 10% CO2 reduction per transported unit within three years will receive the 2nd Star.
This can also be achieved with proven reduction from historical data analysis according to the requirements for Star 2.
Reduction measures focus on improving data quality to align with international standards and collaboration projects.
5% REDUCTION IN 2 YEARS
STAR 3
Companies persuing the Lean & Green CO2 Action Plan and achieving an additional 5% CO2 reduction per transported unit within two years will receive the 3rd Star.
This can also be achieved with proven reduction from historical data analysis according to the requirements for Star 3.
Reduction measures focus on further collaboration and innovation within the supply chain.
55% REDUCTION in 2030
STAR 4
Following the 35% reduction of the first three stars, companies achieving a total of 55% CO2 reduction per transported unit before end of 2030 will receive the 4th Star.
This is translated in to a annual reduction target with an increased data quality use for analysis.
Reduction measures focus on reflection on previous measuresand the implementation of new projects.
'PARIS' CLIMATE GOALS
STAR 5
The Lean & Green program evolves. Like all other Stars the 5th will be developed in collaboration with the participating companies and our partners.
METHODOLOGY
Carbon Footprinting
Lean & Green uses international standards in CO2 calculation and allocation.
“Virtually all methodologies now use the Green House Gas protocol as a starting point. The European standard EN 16258 was the first major initiative to develop a practical and scientifically correct method for attributing emissions to logistics and transport.”
The current EN 16258 standard will be replaced by the ISO 14083 standard in 2023.
